Excerpt: ...which is subscribed by the Protector alone, is in the hand-writing of Sir Thomas Smith, who remained faithful to the last, and shared in his imprisonment in the Tower. This last communication convinced the Earl of Warwick and his faction that the spirit of Somerset was broken, and they prepared to follow up the advantage which they had gained. They addressed letters to the sheriffs and justices throughout England, commanding them on their peril to prevent the raising of any force within their bounds; and they sent a messenger to Lord Russel and Sir William Herbert, who easily persuaded these barons to adopt their quarrel and take part against the Duke. This defection of Russel and Herbert seems to me to have been the circumstance which sealed the fate of Somerset. These Barons were two 1549. RUSSEL AND HERBERT'S LETTER. 217 of the best officers in England; they were still at the head of a portion of the army which had been engaged with the rebels in Devonshire; the Protector relied upon their aid, and had written to them to come instantly forward for defence of the King. If they had pushed on to London, Warwick and his friends were scarcely in a condition to make any head against them: but their answer must have been a knell to the Duke; it was as follows.
